Ferrari 512 TR

    Description

    The Ferrari 512 TR is an update to the Ferrari Testarossa, which was produced from 1984 to 1991. The changes affected the engine, chassis, body and price, which at that time was DM 320,000.

    Engine

    The 512 TR engine has been significantly redesigned. Nikasil coated liners were added, along with a new air intake system, Bosch engine management system, larger intake valves and a revised exhaust system. As a result, the power of the 4.9-liter dry-sump engine has increased to 428 hp. against 390 for Testarossa. Dynamic performance has also increased. Acceleration to “hundreds” was reduced from 5.2 to 4.8 s, and the maximum speed increased from 290 kph to 313.8 kph.

    Transmission

    Gearshifting was made easier, something Testarossa owners complained about.

    Chassis

    The car received a bottom reinforced in places of high loads with chromium-molybdenum steel. New welding methods have strengthened the joints. The transmission and rear suspension of the 512 TR were mounted directly on the solid rear frame. These changes contributed to a significant increase in torsional rigidity and weight reduction.

    To make full use of the power, the 512 TR also received new cast alloy wheels. These wheels are lower profile versions of the Testarossa with thinner spokes for improved brake cooling that received larger perforated discs. These changes, along with more precise steering and new damper settings, have greatly improved handling.

    Exterior

    The body of the 512 TR received minor exterior changes to improve aerodynamics. Changes included a one-piece nose with a rounded front grille, flush-mounted headlights and air vents, and a new underbody. At the rear, a small tail smoothed out the airflow. High-speed stability and cooling improved, while lift was reduced.

    Interior

    The interior of the 512 TR most clearly differed from the Testarossa with changes to the center console, which was separated from the instrument panel to create a more spacious feel in the cabin. The basic shape and layout of the dashboard remained unchanged, although its edges were rounded off. Some gauges and gauges have been moved to the center console. The 512 TR also received an updated Momo steering wheel with a slightly thicker leather-wrapped rim. The seats have been redesigned and lowered.
