Pininfarina Battista Concept
Description
Pininfarina Battista Concept is a pre-production prototype of an electric two-seater supercar, which was presented on March 5, 2019 at the Geneva Motor Show.
Development
In 2015, the Indian consortium Mahindra Group bought out the Italian tailor Pininfarina S.p.A with far-reaching plans for the production of electric SUVs. For this, a separate company, Automobili Pininfarina GmbH, was formed in 2018 with headquarters in Munich, Germany. But before mass-producing models on shared platforms with Rivian, Pininfarina decided to pay tribute to its founder Giovanni Battista Farina (1893-1966) and name a prototype introduced in 2018, codenamed PF0, after him.
The production of the supercar was scheduled for 2020 in honor of the 90th anniversary of the founding of the company. The first mass-produced car in the history of the company was planned to be produced in an edition of 150 copies at a price of 1.7 million pounds. The planned 150 copies were planned to be equally distributed among the markets of America, Europe and Asia.
The car was designed by Luca Borgogno and Carlo Bonzanigo and shared 40-50% of the technical components with the Rimac C_Two. At the time of its debut, it was named the fastest production car in the history of Italian motorization and the fastest electric car on the market.
Michael Perschke, CEO of Automobili Pininfarina: “This is the most authentic and exciting automotive story imaginable. The Battista is a hypercar of the future, inspired by a legendary past. It combines true inspiration and innovation in its technical achievements and emotional appeal, the door to new levels of performance and a zero-emissions future, while passion and respect for automotive history will define how this iconic vehicle will look and feel. We are committed to making the Battista a future classic and automotive icon that has written its own page in automotive history textbooks."
Engine
The power plant of the car consisted of 4 electric motors located on each wheel. Their total power output was 1400 kW and 2300 Nm of torque. The engines were powered by a 120 kWh battery (LiNiMnCoO2) supplied by Rimac Automobili. To maintain the operating temperature of the thermal part of the electrical system, the car was equipped with a liquid cooling system with five radiators. The battery had a T-shape for location in the central tunnel and good weight distribution. It could be charged from high capacity charging stations, from 20% to 80% charge in less than 25 minutes. A full charge allowed the car to cover a distance of 450 kilometers.
According to Automobili Pininfarina Battista had a top speed of 349 kph (217 mph), and could accelerate from 0 to 96 kph (0-60 mph) in less than 2 seconds and to 300 kph (186 mph) in less than 12 seconds.
Brake system
The Brembo-designed braking system was designed for very high performance, featuring 390mm carbon ceramic discs at the front and 380mm at the rear with 6-piston calipers designed for energy recovery. The active rear wing also served as an aerodynamic brake.
Chassis
The car had an independent suspension of all wheels with electronic adjustment to ensure maximum comfort in all driving conditions. Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires were fitted to 21-inch wheels.
The monocoque carbon fiber chassis has been reinforced with aluminum impact structures front and rear. Most of the body panels were also made from carbon fiber, which kept the weight low.
Exterior
The Pininfarina Battista style is the result of a collaboration between the Automobili Pininfarina and Pininfarina design team led by Carlo Bonzanigo. The appearance of the car reflected the canons of the traditional Pininfarina philosophy: it combined a design principle that ensured the perfect balance between form and function. The design was inspired by legendary models such as the 1947 Cisitalia 202, over a hundred Ferraris built in collaboration with Pininfarina, and the 2008 Sintesi concept car. As a result, the car's exterior design featured a sleek, daring silhouette, combining contrasting body colors with a black painted roof and multiple embossings seamlessly connected to the air intakes. The front panel was decorated with a characteristic luminous strip of LEDs.
Interior
The interior of the car, covered with leather in different colors, was concentrated around the driver. The rounded hexagon-shaped carbon fiber steering wheel was flanked on both sides by two large touchscreens: driving data on the left and an infotainment system with navigation on the right. Two rotors controlled the gearbox on the right and driving dynamics on the left.
