Porsche Mission X

The Porsche Mission X is a 2-seater electric sports concept that was unveiled on June 8, 2023, ahead of the opening of the 75 Years of Porsche Sports Cars exhibition at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. This is a significant date: 75 years ago, on June 8, 1948, the 356 Roadster became the first Porsche-branded car to receive an operating permit. This was the birth of the sports car brand.

    Development and design

“Porsche Mission X is a technological beacon for the sports cars of the future. It takes over from the iconic sports cars of past decades: like the 959, Carrera GT and 918 Spyder before it, the Mission X provides a decisive impetus for the evolution of future car concepts,” said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. “The courage to dream and dream cars are two sides of the same coin for us: Porsche has remained Porsche only because it has been constantly changing.”

The concept is about 4.5 meters long and two meters wide and is a relatively compact hypercar. The low-slung body, less than 1.2 meters high, is painted in Rocket Metallic, an elegant paint color specially developed for concept study.

The wheels of the concept are distinguished by carefully thought-out details: the rear axle is equipped with almost transparent aerodynamic blades, which are made in the form of turbines for better cooling of the brakes. Above both passengers hangs a light glass dome with a carbon fiber exoskeleton. Le Mans style doors attached to the A-pillar and roof; they open forward and upward. This type of door was previously used on the legendary Porsche 917 racing car. Another eye-catching element is the light signature: for the Mission X, the designers have reinterpreted Porsche's characteristic four-dot graphic. The vertical shape of the headlights was inspired by historic racing cars such as the Porsche 906 and 908 and points down towards the road. A high-tech support structure surrounds the LED light modules and exposes the narrow, exposed elements of the daytime running lights and turn indicators.

A special detail is the redesigned Porsche Crest, which makes its debut on the Mission X. Brushed precious metal, 3D honeycomb structure, updated heraldic beast and a more subtle gold color. On the Mission X, it is found on the hood and steering wheel, and in monochrome on the rims.

    Mechanics

Porsche did not provide technical specifications at the time of the presentation of the car, since it is a running model, and not a working prototype. But, it was reported that the car will have a purely electric propulsion system and unrivaled performance and calculation of "1 kg per 1 hp", aiming to become the fastest road vehicle on the Nürburgring's Nordschleife.

The 900-volt system architecture aims to charge it around twice as fast as the Taycan Turbo S. The centrally mounted battery emphasizes the car's agility while maintaining the excellent balance of a mid-engined car.

    Interior

Orientation to the driver is seen in the asymmetry of the interior and its color concept. The two seats are painted differently. In addition to Andalusia Brown leather upholstery, the driver's seat is finished in Kalahari Gray and shares the same color scheme with the center console and instrument panel. The passenger seat is finished in a contrasting shade of Andalusia Brown. Aside from the carbon fiber seat frames and their six-point seat belts built into the monocoque, further motorsport parallels include an open-top steering wheel that has mode switches and paddle shifters. There are several cameras on board. Recording starts as soon as the driver presses the record (REC) button on the multifunction controller.

Another highlight is on the passenger side, where a bayonet system is built into the dashboard, to which a stopwatch module can be attached. For the Mission X, Porsche Design has created a dedicated stopwatch module with analog and digital display. The watch is designed for both racetracks and rallies and can display lap times or vital driver data, among other information.
