Porsche Vision Gran Turismo

Porsche and studio Polyphony Digital have unveiled the Porsche Vision Gran Turismo (Vision GT for short) electric supercar, a concept electric supercar designed specifically for Gran Turismo 7, which is due out on the Sony PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles in March 2022.

For Porsche, this was the first experience of creating a concept car specifically for the game – in all previous versions of Gran Turismo there were only virtual copies of production cars of the German brand. Thus, the company followed the lead of other manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz, McLaren, Lamborghini and Jaguar. And judging by the 13-minute video presentation, the concept was built “in metal” in full size.

“A car built exclusively for virtual space opens up an exciting freedom for us that is tightly regulated in the normal production car design process,” said Michael Mauer, Head of Styling at Porsche. “Projects such as the Porsche Vision Gran Turismo are especially valuable to us in the creative process. Further developing our well-defined Porsche Design DNA and exchanging with designers from other industries is an important part of our work.”

Vice President of Marketing Robert Ader did not hide why the Porsche Vision Gran Turismo concept was "drawn": "We can only attract young people where their car dreams are born – in the world of games."

In the guise of the Vision GT, it was easy to see the resemblance to the very real Porsche Mission R concept, which was presented to the public in September 2021 at the Munich Motor Show.

The electric supercar was more powerful and faster than the Mission R. In the description of the Vision GT, the following specifications were given: peak power – 820 kW (1115 hp), and 950 kW (1292 hp) are available in overboost mode, full drive, acceleration to 100 kph – in 2.1 s, up to 200 kph – in 5.4 s, maximum speed – 350 kph. The battery capacity is 87 kWh, the power reserve on one charge according to the WLTP cycle is 500 km.

The body of the concept was made of carbon fiber and titanium. Access to the two-seat cockpit is through a large transparent dome that leans forward, as there were no traditional doors.

“We have been working for a long time on the concept of the right material, consisting of carbon and titanium. Our goal was to reduce weight and at the same time increase performance,” says Markus Auerbach, Head of Interior Design at Porsche. “Environmental aspects also play a role in future-oriented projects. For example, only pure vegan materials were used in the concept car.”

The design received proportions typical of the brand, and some details became the evolution of serial elements. These include the Taycan-inspired headlights and air intakes, and a light bar at the stern, an evolution of the "light signature" familiar from the stock Porsche 911. Game creator Kazunori Yamauchi called the design "purist".

The concept had a detailed interior, or rather a cockpit, where the driver and the only passenger were separated by a powerful carbon fiber “rail”. The steering wheel was in the form of a fork. The instrument panel was a thin transparent curved screen with three round dials, replaced in the video game by even more futuristic hologram-style instruments.
