Description
In the summer of 2017, the original Aston Martin DB11 with a V12 engine was supplemented with a version with a V8 engine developed by Mercedes-AMG. The cost of such a model was about 184,000 euros.
Engine
Aston Martin Technical Director Max Schwei commented: “As an engineer, I find the DB11 a fascinating car. A car with great depth of character and ability. Of course, the V12-powered variant is an icon – perfect if you will – but the V8 is in many ways its own car. A car with a distinct and carefully crafted character that is truly seductive. It was very rewarding to put my stamp on this new engine - both in how it sounds and how it works - and also to use its impressive attributes as an incentive to reveal a bit more of the DB11's sporty character. Being able to offer not one but two exceptional GT vehicles is amazing for Aston Martin and our customers. Not least because, thanks to the nature of our relationship with AMG, we have been given complete freedom to tailor this exceptional powertrain to suit the special needs and requirements of Aston Martin.”
Aston Martin's engineering team has perfectly adapted the V8 engine for use in the DB11 with individual air intake, exhaust and wet sump lubrication systems. The electronic calibration of the V8 engine included the creation of new software to ensure it has all the important feel and sound that Aston Martin is known for. To this end, Aston Martin engineers developed new engine mounts which, together with a unique thin wet sump system, allowed the V8 to be mounted as low as possible for an optimal center of gravity. The V8 engine is also lighter and more compact than the V12, resulting in a savings of 115kg and a weight of 1760kg and a better axle weight distribution of 49/51 instead of 51/49.
The Mercedes-Benz M177 twin-turbocharged V8 engine had a power output of 503 hp. and 675 Nm of torque. The car with it accelerated to 100 kph in 4 s instead of 3.9 s on the V12 and reach a top speed of 305 kph.
Exterior
On the exterior, the V8 model received subtle differences: two hood vents instead of four, original wheel design, dark headlight bezels, an unpainted grille and no V12 nameplates on the front fenders.
Interior
Inside, the V8 model had the same level of standard equipment and the same wide range of colors and finishes as the V12 model.
